In-Home Newborn Photography Tips & Tricks for New Moms
As a mom of four, I know just how tender and emotional the newborn stage can be. I’ve absolutely loved those early days with each of my babies - the quiet moments, the exhaustion, the sweetness, and the way time seems to slow down and speed up all at once.
That lived experience is what I bring into every in-home newborn session. I’m deeply familiar with working around newborn rhythms, tired parents, and the beautiful unpredictability that comes with welcoming a new baby home.
Why In-Home Newborn Photography is So Special
I photograph newborns in the comfort of their own homes, where parents can relax, mom can nurse when needed, take breaks, and simply be present. There’s no packing up a days-old baby and rushing out the door to make it in time for a studio session.
For many moms, especially those still recovering, staying home makes the entire experience feel calmer and more manageable. In the end, you receive images that reflect exactly where you are in life right now - not just your baby, but the space where your family is beginning this new chapter.
A Lifestyle Approach that puts mom first
My approach to newborn photography is very natural and connection-focused. I capture babies being held, soothed, fed, and loved by their parents.
While studio newborn photography and posed setups are beautiful, my sessions are designed to feel low stress and gentle. I don’t spend hours moving through structured poses. Instead, I focus on real moments, soft movement, and the relationships unfolding in front of me.
Most sessions last about 1 to 1.5 hours, keeping everything calm and manageable for everyone and allowing you to relax afterward without feeling worn out.
Why These Photos matter More Over Time
When I look back at my own children’s newborn photos taken in our home, I can’t help but feel emotional. We no longer live in the house where we brought home the first three of our four children, but when I see those images, I don’t just see my tiny newborn.
I see the rooms, the walls, the spaces filled with memories. Every inch of that home held so much love, and I’m so grateful to have photographs that reflect our real life during those early days.
That’s what I hope to give you - a visual reminder of this fleeting season, exactly as it was.
How to Prepare for Your In-Home Newborn Session
A little preparation helps everything feel smooth and relaxed:
Try to feed your baby right before I arrive, if possible
Open all windows and blinds to let in as much natural light as you can
Keep the space warm enough for baby, but not so warm that mom feels uncomfortable
If you have a sound machine, have it ready as it can be very soothing
Have a pacifier available, even if your baby doesn’t typically use one. Sometimes we’ll use it briefly to help baby settle, then remove it for photos
What to Wear for your newborn session
Light, neutral colors and soft palettes photograph beautifully
Lighter tones help reflect natural light into baby’s face
Including Older Siblings
If siblings are part of the session:
Have quick snacks ready for short breaks
Expect a little chaos - it’s completely normal!
The more relaxed you are, the more relaxed your children will be
I promise that no matter what unfolds during the session, I will capture beautiful moments along the way.
A Few final Details
When I arrive, it’s great to have a few meaningful items set aside, such as a special blanket or an outfit you’d love to incorporate. I’ll also take a few moments to photograph the nursery and small details around the room. I’ll bring along a few simple, neutral swaddles and baby wraps as well, in case you’d like to use them during your session.
Most sessions take place in:
The living room
The nursery
The primary bedroom, often on the bed
I recommend tidying up the areas you’d like photographed. It doesn’t need to be perfect, just clearing a bit of the everyday clutter that naturally builds up when you bring home a baby. I’ll focus on the rooms with the best natural light and bring additional lighting for any spaces that need it.
The Most Important Thing
Relax and enjoy this time.
Newborn sessions rarely go exactly as planned, and that’s perfectly ok. These early days are real, emotional, and fleeting. My goal is to capture them in a way that feels calm, honest, and true to your family.
Follow these tips and tricks for a calm, meaningful in-home newborn photography experience, and trust that even amidst the beautiful chaos, you’ll walk away with images that reflect your real life in the most heartfelt way.
